Tangier Tour Guide by Car
Tangier rewards drivers: the medina, Cap Spartel, Asilah, Tetouan and Chefchaouen are all easy day trips by car. This tour guide maps the essential stops with distances, drive times and parking, start every route in Tangier with a full tank.
Medina and Kasbah on foot
Park in the guarded lots at the port or Marshan (10–20 MAD/day) and walk up through Bab el Bahr into the medina. Allow 3 hours: Grand Socco, the kasbah museum (Dar el Makhzen), Place du Tabor and mint tea at Café Hafa overlooking the Strait.
The kasbah lanes are too narrow for cars and full of steps, this is the one Tangier sight you do not drive.
Cap Spartel and Hercules Caves loop
The classic half-day loop: Tangier → Cap Spartel lighthouse (14 km, 25 min) → Hercules Caves → Achakkar beach sunset → back via the Atlantic road. About 45 km total, 3–4 hours with stops.
Caves entry is a few dirhams; arrive before 17:00 in summer to beat the buses. Parking is guarded at both sites.
Asilah day trip (48 km)
Blue-and-white Asilah is 45–50 minutes south on the A5. Park outside the medina walls, walk the painted lanes, eat grilled fish at the port, and be back for dinner. Best on weekdays, weekends fill with day-trippers from Tangier.
Tetouan (65 km) and Chefchaouen (115 km)
Tetouan: 1h15 via the N2, Spanish-flavoured medina (UNESCO) and a good half-day with lunch. Chefchaouen: 2h15 via Tetouan on mountain road N2: leave by 8:00, fill up in Tetouan, return by nightfall.
Both pair well: Tetouan in the morning, Chefchaouen afternoon and blue-hour photos, dinner back in Tangier. That is a long day, consider it only with an early start.
Beaches by car
Achakkar (Atlantic, surf, sunset) 25 min west; Sidi Kacem and Cabo Negro/Martil (calm Mediterranean) 30–40 min east toward Tetouan. Summer weekends need an early arrival for parking; off-season you will have them nearly alone.
1, 2 and 3-day plans
One day: medina morning + Cap Spartel afternoon. Two days: add Asilah. Three days: add Chefchaouen (or Tetouan + beaches). Every plan assumes your own car, taxis to Chefchaouen cost more than a day of rental.
